Kenojuak Ashevak (1927-2013)
Born in 1927 on southern Baffin Island, Kenojuak Ashevak has created some of the most iconic and instantly recognizable images in Canadian Art. She worked in sculpture but she is best known for her entrancing graphic images. These images encompass imaginative and varied themes, with her most favourite subject being birds, especially owls, as well as depictions of female hunters. She began drawing in the late 1950s and up to her death showed a constant interest in experimenting with new techniques. Ashevak's primary mediums were pen, ink, and prismacolour pencils. She also practiced printmaking, stained glass, sewing, and carving. She is the most famous woman artist in Cape Dorset and a pioneer of modern Inuit art. She has had over 200 exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Japan, Holland, Greenland, South Korea, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, France and Germany.
