Joe Talirunili (1893-1976)
Joe Talirunili was born between 1893 and 1906, approximately 50 km north of Puvirnituq, Nunavik, at Neahungnik camp. Talirunili was one of the founders of the Puvirnituq print shop. Common themes in Joe’s works included hunting trips and migration scenes. In addition to his migration carvings, Joe Talirunili also made a number of drawings and stone cut-prints in the 1960`s. Over the span of his lifetime, Joe made over 70 prints. His works were included in the Puvirnituq annual print collections in the 1960s. These images mostly depict everyday scenes of Inuit life (hunting, wildlife, fishing, and family life). His work has been widely acquired by public and private collectors. Joe is perhaps best known for his work called “Migration” which portrays one of his childhood experiences, when families set sail in an umiak (large sealskin boat) to travel to better hunting grounds. This scene was repeatedly depicted in Joe’s carvings, drawings and prints.
