Germaine Arnaktauyok (1946-)
Germaine Arnaktauyok is an accomplished artist and writer, based in Yellowknife, NT. She studied Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba, Commercial Art and Fine Craft at Algonquin College as well as Printmaking at Arctic College in Nunavut. In her work, Arnaktauyok focuses primarily on Inuit myths, stories and female narratives centered on birth, tattoos and motherhood. Her greatest influences come from her childhood in the Igloolik area of Nunavut, the people around her and the experiences she had drive the themes in her art. She has illustrated and written several books, and her work has appeared on both the $2 and $200 dollar coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. She has illustrated children’s books in Ottawa, Manitoba and Japan. The rich and beautifully colored art depict a kaleidoscope of her Igluingmiut heritage, ranging from philosophy to astronomy to mythology of Inuit bygone times.
